International Phone Rates
To direct dial an internation call from the US you dial:
011 + country code + city code + local number
Calling a foreign country using your cell phone (without using a dial-around or calling card service) will be expensive. You will likely pay well over $1.00 per minute calling to or from most European countries.
When you are travelling abroad you will get a much better rate using an international calling card. Rates from Germany, the United Kingdom and most other countries to the US are less than 20 cents per minute.
When you are in the US there are many low cost options including direct dial (011 companies), dial-arounds, calling cards, and Voice over IP (Internet phone).
A word of caution about all calling cards: Watch out some calling cards that have extra charges.
- Some cards have an expiration date. Funds left on an expired card are lost.
- Some cards have a maintenance fee. Some maintenance fees are charged weekly, some monthly. This essentially increases the effective per minute rates.
- Some cards are pre-paid and cannot be "re-charged". This means that some amount of money left on a card cannot be used because you would not have enough left for a good conversation.
